Heading out with friends who are drinking can be a blast, but it helps to have a game plan to keep your night fun and focused on your sobriety.

  • Have a non-alcoholic drink ready from the start – a sparkling water with lime, an NA beer, or a soda can look just like an alcoholic one.
  • Tell your friends beforehand that you’re not drinking; good friends will understand and support you.
  • Eat a good meal before you go to avoid temptation fueled by hunger.
  • Know your “why” – remind yourself of your reasons for staying sober if challenged or tempted.
  • Plan your exit strategy; know when and how you’ll leave if things get too uncomfortable or late.
  • Stay engaged in conversation; being an active participant keeps you present and connected.
  • Focus on connecting with your friends, not on what they are drinking.
  • Suggest activities that aren’t solely centered around alcohol, like bowling, arcades, or specific events.
  • Don’t be afraid to say no firmly if offered a drink – a simple “No thanks, I’m good” is usually enough.
  • Remember to have fun! Your sobriety is a strength, and you absolutely can enjoy a night out on your own terms.
