Soberish, Sober, or Sober AF? Which Stage of the Journey Are You In?

If you listen to our podcast, you’ve probably heard us ask our guests a crucial question: “Where do you fall on the scale?”

At StaySoberAF.com, we don’t believe sobriety is a one-size-fits-all label. It’s a progression. It’s a ladder. And the goal is to keep climbing until you earn the title of Sober AF. But to get there, you have to understand where you are starting.

Here is the official breakdown of the three stages we talk about on the show:

1. The “Soberish” Phase

This is the exploration phase. You might be “California Sober,” engaging in “Dry January,” or just questioning your relationship with alcohol. You might still have a drink now and then, but you are becoming conscious of the cost.

  • The Vibe: Curiosity.

  • The Goal: To learn more and prepare for the jump.

2. The “Sober” Phase (0 – 12 Months)

This is the grind. You have officially put the bottle down, but you are in the trenches. “Sober” describes anyone who has been completely alcohol-and-drug-free for less than a year. This is where the hardest work happens—rewiring your brain, navigating your first sober holidays, and learning who you are without the buzz.

  • The Vibe: Determination.

  • The Goal: Making it to that 365-day mark.

3. The “Sober AF” Status (1 Year+)

This is the black belt of our community. To be Sober AF means you have successfully navigated over a year of complete sobriety from alcohol and drugs. You’ve hit your “sober birthday” and kept going. This isn’t just about not drinking anymore; it’s about mastery. It’s about having a lifestyle that is so full, you don’t miss the old days.
